I'm going to my very first ballet this Friday (on my b-day!) and I have been trying to figure out what the heck to wear over my dress. After attempting to decide all week long, I decided it was probably time to enlist some help. This is the dress I am wearing:

I live in upstate NY and the show is at 7 so it will be chilly (probably between 40-50 degrees). I am planning on wearing black tights and flats but I am not sure what the heck to wear on top. I have a tailored denim jacket which would look cute... but I think it would look ridiculous to put a jean jacket under a winter peacoat, so if I wore it (am I wrong about this?) so I would have to forgo any sort of heavier coat and hope I don't get too cold.
I was also thinking of wearing a cardigan, but I'm not sure if I should go for the long, boyfriend type, a normal length one, or a cropped (shrug). I tend to think that shrugs look retarded, but I'm not the most fashion forward chick so... I'm willing to wear one if it is recommended. The advantage of wearing a cardiagan would obviously be that I could wear a heavier coat over it too if necessary.
So what do you think? I keep changing my mind about what I think is best. First it was the denim, then the long cardigan, then the medium, etc... I need to take a break from thinking about this. BTW, the show is NOT opening night so good casual is fine. This is not a super dressy affair.
Thank you all for saving my fashion challenged butt!
