I'm going to my very first ballet this Friday (on my b-day!) and I have been trying to figure out what the heck to wear over my dress. After attempting to decide all week long, I decided it was probably time to enlist some help. This is the dress I am wearing:

I live in upstate NY and the show is at 7 so it will be chilly (probably between 40-50 degrees). I am planning on wearing black tights and flats but I am not sure what the heck to wear on top. I have a tailored denim jacket which would look cute... but I think it would look ridiculous to put a jean jacket under a winter peacoat, so if I wore it (am I wrong about this?) so I would have to forgo any sort of heavier coat and hope I don't get too cold.
I was also thinking of wearing a cardigan, but I'm not sure if I should go for the long, boyfriend type, a normal length one, or a cropped (shrug). I tend to think that shrugs look retarded, but I'm not the most fashion forward chick so... I'm willing to wear one if it is recommended. The advantage of wearing a cardiagan would obviously be that I could wear a heavier coat over it too if necessary.
So what do you think? I keep changing my mind about what I think is best. First it was the denim, then the long cardigan, then the medium, etc... I need to take a break from thinking about this. BTW, the show is NOT opening night so good casual is fine. This is not a super dressy affair.
Thank you all for saving my fashion challenged butt!

your link doesn't work for your dress...
1Hmm. Try this one:

Just in case, I can describe the dress. It's empire waist, knee-length, and sleeveless. It is black with a large gray floral pattern on it and has an A-line skirt.
I generally stay away from empire waists since I feel like they often make me look pregnant... but for some reason, this dress has a front that lies very flat. I'm just not sure if a jacket or longer cardigan will look silly with a higher waist.
2Cute dress, but I don't really think denim is going to be the way to go. Do a cardigan... but try it on together first. A long one (to your hips) is probably going to look dumb, but an average-to-somewhat-short length will probably be totally manageable. I wouldn't do a shrug either... you'll want the sweater to cover the skin on your back. And happy early birthday! I'm sure it's going to look cute, whatever you decide!
3well if it's not too late, I would say that is one cute dress! and I would totally go with the shrug. I know you say your not too fond of them, in that case the cardigan I could just see the shrug covering your shoulders but not that cute waist detail....and if you can get dropped off and picked up in front of the building instead of having to walk from the parking garage then you won't get too chilly
Happy BDay, have fun!
4I agree, it is a really cute dress. I'd probably wear a dressy/lady like coat with it, something made out of wool for warmth in neutral color (i.e. black).
5If you need a layering, I'd opt for a cardigan too.
If it's a little too long, use a belt over the cardigan and dress for a more 'fitted' look.
