So I am 26 years old and terrified of online dating. My boyfriend of 3 years left because he said he needed more and that I wasn't enough for him. I've never had much luck with dating. I have a good personality and I am smart, but I am not very attractive. I'm just an average looking girl who men want to be friends with, but not date. I always get "If I could just find a girl like you who wasn't you." Translation, I would date you if you were hot, but since you aren't lets just be friends. Everyone keeps telling me that I should try online dating, but honestly I am terrified. I don't know if I can handle being rejected on that level. Any advice?
Start London
*Shrug* Try it anyway, it's really just the same thing, only you meet someone first online rather than in person. Either way, people are people. Try "okcupid" if you're up for it. It's fee.
1The beauty of online dating is that you put your picture up and people contact YOU so really, there is no rejection. As long as you dont exaggerate your pictures or put really old pics up then you should be fine.
But, you need to deal with your self esteem issues before trying to meet anyone. Confidence is sexy and if you dont like how you look, how will anyone else?
2Why do you think online dating will be any different than real life? You need self confidence before you even THINK about dinner with a guy. If you weren't enough for your last boyfriend, that's his problem - not yours.
Read some books, get into therapy, start working out, get a new hairstyle and try something different with your makeup. Refresh yourself physically and emotionally and you'll have much better luck dating.
3"If I could just find a girl like you who wasn't you".
Wow. Harsh. Men are such assholes. No wonder you are petrified and have self esteem issues.
Agree with the above advice. I would also add that I would try to take up a new hobby or interest, join a gym, etc., just so that if you run through a dry spell with online dating as well, you are doing other things that you enjoy and that make you feel good about yourself.
