Maybe this is my midlife crisis (I'm 35), but I am finding that it is very hard to find any pleasure in life. I love spending time with my kids, but as they're getting older, they want less to do with me and more with their friends. So, I need to find things for me. I've been a stay-at-home mom for the past 11 years, and I'm opening my own business this summer, so I think I need to do something really fun with my life before then. Any ideas? And please don't say "get a hobby" because when I think hobby I think boring stuff like scrapbooking, knitting, photography, etc. The bottom line is is need something that makes me feel alive, not like a boring housewife.
Single Dress
Can you remember what made you feel alive when you were younger? Was there a sport you loved to play? Were you in school plays or the band? Did you love to hike? Swim? Go to the beach?
All those things you can probably do at some level as an adult, with some time commitment, sure, but that's sort of a given.
I feel my "best" when I have goals to work towards. There is a huge sense of satisfaction to decide, "I'm going to do this" and then do it. I agree, no knitting or scrapbooking. But what about training for a run or a bike race?
Hobbies don't have to be all "house-wifey" either. You could take auto-shop or ceramics, photography, painting and drawing.
I hope you find something you enjoy!!
1golf, bike, downski-all things that are fun and challenging
2Go to school and get an education. My bff is 32 and has 2 kids, and she just went to college for the first time and loves it.
3I can hear myself when you say you want to feel alive.
I agree, physical challenges. Anything that will get you back in touch with your body and its strength, agility, etc, will make you feel alive.
Or how about a biking/hiking/sailing, etc adventure, with a girlfriend or group?
What about a volunteer trip where you are doing something physical, like building homes for people, etc? That'll give you the added benefit of renewing your perspective on your own life.
4I think you need to get your best girlfriends together and go on a girls getaway! You need to put on a new outfit that makes you feel sexy, get all dolled up with hair and makeup and just feel like you did before your husband and kids. It will freshen your outlook and make you feel good about your place in your family. PS: Start a girls night once a week if you can't get away for a night or two. Good Luck with your with your new business!
