My best friend's boyfriend recently sought me out to help him find the perfect engagement ring for my best friend. He's got an idea of what ring she would like but wanted to double check with me before he made such a huge investment. Since she and I have been friends for such a long time, engagement rings have come up in conversation many times before and I know exactly the style that she would love. The only problem is I feel sort of helpless when it comes to finding a "quality" diamond. And her boyfriend is pretty much just as helpless. He knows that he's going to have to spend the money if he wants a nice ring, he just doesn't want to end up paying thousands for a piece of junk. I've heard about the 4 C's but am embarrassed to say that I'm clueless.
Can anyone point me in the direction for "Engagement Rings for Dummies"? Or just give me a few tips so I don't look foolish when he asks me to go with him and help him out. THANKS.

2He should worry about the 4Cs - you should just direct him to the style.
3Though I realize many people place a lot of importance on having a natural diamond engagement ring, and I totally understand that, I'd just like to also suggest the possibility of a synthetic diamond or a diamond alternative. Due to the difficulties of ensuring that a diamond is conflict free, and the problems with diamonds being controlled by a near monopoly, it is my personal opinion that it is more socially responsible to go for non-diamond stones, or synthetic diamonds (which these days can be of flawless quality and indistiguishavble from a mined diamond). Again I'm aware that not every one shares this view, and I'm not trying to be up on a high horse about it or anything, I just wanted to share my opinion in case it is the sort of thing you, your friend, or her boyfriend would want to consider. Also, if you feel like a sythetic stone is out of the question, I recommend looking for a canadian diamond, as that will ensure a conflict free stone.

you could also try a vintage ring or a new setting for a family ring.
