I'm a part time student at Parsons (in New York) for fashion studies. What I know so far is that I love fashion, and that the next best place in the world to get a degree for it besides Paris is NYC. But I also have to commute from Jersey-an hour and a half train ride each way-to get to school and the commute is getting tiring. The ride is boring and a lot of my HW is sketching so I can't do it on the train. It is so not financially feasible for me to live in NYC right now, even if I work part time. When I first started school, I thought that the excitement of my favorite city and the fact that I'm doing something I love would somehow help me get over the pitfalls. I still have about four more years of work to go at the rate I'm going. I'm sooo confused and mentally exhausted. Feedback is welcome.

What are the pitfalls other than a long commute? If it's just the commute, surely you can find accommodations closer to school.
Are you sure this is what you want to do with your life? I think if it were truly your dream come true you'd come up with whatever solution allowed you to continue pursuing it.
1I wouldn't drop out of school just because the ride to & from is long.
That has absolutely nothing to do with how much you like fashion or how good of a designer you'll be.
2A career in fashion means a life spent in major cities where you'll never be able to afford the housing you want. If you're unhappy with long commutes and expensive costs of living now, you will be later too, even when you have a job. I would seriously rethink your career path.
3I understand what you're going through. I studied Fashion Design about 7 years ago and had an 1.5 hour commute too! IT SUCKED!!!! I was tired, cranky and unmotivated. I moved closer to school and that helped dramatically. You need to resolve your problem ASAP. Either learn to live with your commute or move closer. If you want to move closer don't worry too much about finding a place you can afford. Plenty of people live in NYC who are not wealthy. You'll probably have to move further out than Manhattan or super trendy Williamsburg.
Honestly it sounds like your heart isn't in it right now which is OK. Just make your choices carefully. It's a horrible feeling to leave school, and realize that in the 4 years that have passed you could have had a degree, instead you have debt and a mediocre job. It's also quite miserable to study something and incur debt and waste time doing something that doesn't satisfy.
I love fashion too, but I realized that Fashion design was not for me. I am studying English and art now and hope to write for Fashion magazines and eventually start my own media empire (mwahh haa haa!!!) I kind of felt like a loser when I left school, but I know I made a good decision and that loserific feeling went away quickly!
Stay focused on hearing your inner voice, don't discuss this with too many people (it'll just confuse you), and take comfort in the fact that you're still young, you can do whatever you want with your life!
4Good luck to you!!!

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I'm fairly sure I'm going to stick with school. Maybe It's possible for me to save up and eventually be able to move closer to school.
