My boyfriend and I have been together for about 2 1/2 years now, and have decided to get on the pill. My only problem - I know it sounds stupid, selfish, whatever - is that I'm worried I'll gain weight. I work really hard to stay fit and would rather not have sex than get fat. How much weight do you normally gain, if any at all?

There was a somewhat recent post on this topic (i'm a regular reader...) so I thought i'd give you the link to the page:

Personally I didn't gain any weight but that's because I'm like you, I work out and eat right so there's really no chance for it. When you read this post, it is more of a myth than fact.
1ive been on the pill for the last 2 years and i have had no problems with weight gain, if anything i have lost weight.. i guess it also depends on what brand of pill you use as there are so so many out there
2The pills I was taking listed weight gain as a possible side effect. I gained a couple pounds (I can't be sure it wasn't due to other things, though my weight had always been steady prior to that). After a particularly stressful month I lost the whole 5 pounds and haven't gained since (as per usual).
3I went on the pill at 18 and I didnt gain any weight, I have been on several brands since then and none of them have been a problem. I was actually hoping my boobs would get bigger (that didnt happen either). You know what also can make you gain weight? pregnancy.
4Most pills do not cause weight gain. If they do the average is just a few pounds.
5I don't gain weight when I'm on the pill, in fact, I lost some, but that's due to exercise and other stuffs. Maybe it depends on the brand...
6And yes...pregnancy will definitely make you gain weight...
It depends on the kind of b/c you take and the level of horomones i think.
7I gained a few pounds, but I don't think I've heard anything about getting FAT off it.
Better safe than sorry. And AshleyMay is right, depends on the level (I was on a huge level at 16, and I'm 21/22 now.)
I would average I gained about maybe 9 pounds, and I've been on for a long time.
8I always seem to gain water weight and feel so bloated while on the pill. i am looking for one that won't cause either of those things ...... if anyone can help? p.s. for me the worst one for weight gain/water weight was yaz
9you know what... I have been taking birth control pills for almost three years and i have gained about 22 pounds my doctor even gave a new kind of pills
nothing worked I even tried dieting, exercising etc but all those things were useless. next month i'll
be trying IUD. it's 99% effective and you don't have to worry about taking a pill every day!!!
my doctor told me that you get fat not because of the hormones in the pills but because your body thinks you are pregnant and therefore makes you eat more!!!
10gaby666 ..... did your doctor say anything about weight gain, etc. with the IUD? I am considering getting one as well, so I am curious?
11I realize that this post is somewhat old so you've proabably already decided what you're going to do. However, what njau said is wrong. I am on birth control solely because my hormones are messed up, but I exercise regularly and did not change my diet, perhaps exercise more, and I still have gained 5 lbs. in 2 weeks. It has nothing to do with "how much you work out". And it's not a myth.
12Well, i am on the pill, and before i could stay the whole day without eating until i get off at work 7am to 6pm,i could stay without eating but now that im on the pill i get very hungry around 12/lunch time, i don't understand why, i guess the pill is cousing me to get hungry, around 12 my stomach starts to make weird(hungry)sounds, so i guess the pill can make someone fat.
